Padel court turf: specifications and care
What the FIP rules ask of the surface, what a padel turf spec sheet says about pile height, fiber and sand, and how long the turf lasts. There is no US standard for padel surfaces, so we give the FIP rules and say where each other figure comes from.
What the FIP rules allow
- Material: cement, synthetic material or artificial grass, provided the ball bounces regularly.
- Color: green, blue or terracotta, or similar tones; one color for the whole floor, clearly different from the walls.
- Flatness: level differences inside the court under 3 mm (about 1/8 in), measured with a 3 m (about 10 ft) straightedge.
- Slope: on surfaces without drainage, a cross slope of no more than 1 % from the center of the court to the edges.
- Homologation: synthetic and artificial grass surfaces must meet the FIP's courts homologation annex, a separate document from the rules.

Padel court turf specifications: pile height and fiber
The FIP rules give no pile height. What we could find comes from manufacturers, quoted as examples, not as a recommendation:
- A turf manufacturer says pile height is “typically around 10–15 mm” (about 3/8 to 5/8 in), that texturized (curly) yarns are widely used, and that silica sand is commonly used to stabilize the fibers (CCGrass, Padel court construction guide, March 25, 2026).
- A US court manufacturer's spec sheets list synthetic turf in textured monofilament with a 12 mm (about 1/2 in) pile, in blue, green or terracotta with inlaid white lines (Sportsfield Specialties, Outdoor Panoramic Padel Court Systems (product specifications); Sportsfield Specialties, Indoor Full Panoramic Padel Court Systems (product specifications)).
For reference outside the US, the Italian federation's edition of the rules gives a friction range of 0.4 to 0.8 for artificial grass (Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP), Regole del padel, 2021 edition with FIT notes, published by Sport e Impianti, March 2022), and the French federation's 2026 specification asks padel turf to meet the European standard for synthetic turf for tennis (EN 15330-1) and the Spanish padel turf standard UNE 147301 (French Tennis Federation (FFT), specification “La piste de padel” (ref. FF26-146), copy published by the Ligue de tennis de Nouvelle-Calédonie, June 2026). They are not US rules; they show what a federation asks for.
Sand-filled turf and other surfaces
The French federation's specification says competition courts generally use sand-filled or semi-sand-filled synthetic turf, that sand-filled needle-punched carpet is also possible, and that the sand should be rounded, in the amount the turf manufacturer recommends. Cement and synthetic surfaces are allowed by the FIP too, as long as the bounce is regular.
Maintenance and replacement
| Task | How often |
|---|---|
| Brush the court to spread the sand back from the walls | Very regularly |
| Add sand | 1 to 6 times a year |
| Annual check: remove excess sand, decompact, remove dust, brush, final sand top-up | Once a year |
| Decompact the turf | Every 3 to 4 years |
| Replace the turf | Every 6 to 8 years |
Source: French Tennis Federation (FFT), specification “La piste de padel” (ref. FF26-146), copy published by the Ligue de tennis de Nouvelle-Calédonie (June 2026), sections 4.5 and 5. The same document recommends a warranty of at least 5 to 6 years on the turf.
The base under the turf
The turf is only as flat as the slab under it. The turf manufacturer above describes a reinforced concrete or porous asphalt foundation, perfectly leveled, with a 0.5–1 % slope and perimeter channels for drainage (CCGrass, Padel court construction guide). Outdoors, see backyard padel court for the slab and its cost.
Padel court turf price
We found no published US price for padel turf on its own that we could check, so we do not give one. It is usually quoted with the court: the overall estimates are in padel court cost.
What to ask in a quote
- The product: Its name, the fiber (textured or straight monofilament, or fibrillated), the pile height and whether it holds an FIP homologation.
- Infill: The type of sand, how much goes in and who tops it up.
- Color: One color for the whole court, clearly different from the walls (FIP).
- Base: Who checks the slab before the turf goes down: flatness and slope.
- Warranty and maintenance: How many years, on what conditions, and what maintenance keeps it valid.

Frequently asked questions
What turf is used on padel courts?
Artificial grass with sand infill is the usual surface. The FIP allows cement, synthetic material or artificial grass, provided the ball bounces regularly; the French federation’s 2026 specification says competition courts generally use sand-filled or semi-sand-filled synthetic turf.
How thick is padel court turf?
There is no FIP figure in the rules. One turf manufacturer says pile height is typically around 10–15 mm (about 3/8–5/8 in), and one US court manufacturer’s spec sheets list 12 mm (about 1/2 in) textured monofilament.
What colors can padel court turf be?
The FIP allows green, blue or terracotta, or similar tones, in one color for the whole court and clearly different from the walls.
How often does padel turf need replacing?
The French federation’s 2026 maintenance table says every 6 to 8 years, with the turf decompacted every 3 to 4 years and sand added 1 to 6 times a year.
Does padel turf need sand?
Usually: the French federation says competition courts generally use sand-filled or semi-sand-filled turf. Sand builds up along the walls with play, so the French federation says the court has to be brushed very regularly to spread it back over the surface.
What are the padel court turf specifications?
From the FIP: a regular bounce, one color, level differences under 3 mm under a 3 m straightedge and, without drainage, a slope of no more than 1 % from the center out. Turf must also meet the FIP homologation annex, which is a separate document.
