Padel court ceiling height

The first thing to check, before the square feet: a building that does not have the clear height cannot take padel courts, however big it is.

19.7 ft(6 m) minimum clear height throughout the court (FIP)
26.2 ft(8 m) suggested for new facilities (FIP)
19.7 ft(6 m) minimum from the floor to the underside of the lights (FIP)

What the rules say, and who says it

  • FIP, Rules of Padel (2026): the minimum height must be 6 m (19.7 ft) throughout the court, with no elements such as spotlights obstructing that space. For new facilities it suggests a minimum free height of 8 m (26.2 ft), again with nothing in the way.
  • FIP, lighting: at least 6 m from the floor to the underside of the light fixtures; for new facilities, 8 m is suggested when the lights are inside the vertical projection of the court walls. Lights mounted outside the court walls can be at other heights.
  • USA Padel (USPA): its page for new clubs gives no clear-height figure. It says it does not offer direct help with construction, recommends manufacturers whose courts meet FIP standards, and points to the Padel Courts: Installation and Maintenance Manual published by the American Sports Builders Association with USPA input, which is sold separately and which we have not reviewed.

The planner checks the 19.7 ft minimum by default. Its competition preset asks for 26.2 ft (8 m).

What “clear” means

Clear means nothing hangs below that height: no trusses, no joists or beams, no light fixtures, no ductwork and no sprinkler lines. The ball goes up, and the ceiling only stays out of play if it is above that line.

How to measure it in a warehouse

The most common mistake is to trust the height in the listing. Warehouse listings in the US often quote a “clear height”, but check what it was measured to. What counts for padel is the lowest point over the court:

  • With trusses or joists: from the floor to the bottom chord of the truss or the underside of the joist, not to the roof deck.
  • With a pitched roof: the height changes from one wall to the other. Near the eaves it is often under 19.7 ft and in the middle above it, so the courts can only go in the central strip where it works.
  • With services hung below: the lowest thing sets the figure (a light, a duct, a sprinkler main), even if the structure is higher.

A laser distance meter from the floor, at a few points in the building, is enough to know whether it is worth going on. Before you sign, have it checked by the architect or engineer who will design the fit-out.

If the building falls short

If part of the building reaches 19.7 ft and part does not, the courts can go in the part that does and the rest can hold the front desk, locker rooms or a lounge, which do not need that height. The planner does exactly that: with a gable, mono-pitch or arched roof, you enter the eave and ridge heights and it places courts only where the 19.7 ft is met. If you are aiming at the 26.2 ft suggested for new facilities, check that the strip where the courts go reaches it too.

Raising the roof or changing the structure is possible, but it is major work that changes the budget completely. Better to know before you negotiate the lease.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum ceiling height for a padel court?

The FIP Rules of Padel (2026) set a minimum of 6 m, about 19.7 ft, throughout the court, with nothing such as lights obstructing it. For new facilities they suggest 8 m, about 26.2 ft.

Does the USPA set a ceiling height?

Not on its website: USA Padel points clubs to manufacturers whose courts meet FIP standards and to a paid installation manual published with the American Sports Builders Association. We cite the FIP figure.

How high do padel court lights have to be?

The FIP asks for at least 6 m (19.7 ft) from the floor to the underside of the light fixtures, and suggests 8 m (26.2 ft) in new facilities when the lights are inside the vertical projection of the court walls.

Is a warehouse with a 24 ft clear height enough?

On the FIP figures, 24 ft (about 7.3 m) clears the 19.7 ft minimum but not the 26.2 ft suggested for new facilities, provided 24 ft is measured under the lowest obstruction over the court, not at the ridge.
